The Man of Passions From Jean Louis Vivès to Michel de Montaigne

Passions are relevant in the Essays, however, they are rarely studied, and are usually projected onto later theoretical systems, such as Descartes' or Spinoza's, although Montaigne's influence on them is debatable. In this article we will compare his elusive reflections on passions with the contributions of a slightly earlier author, the Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives, whose proximity to the French essayist's perspectives is striking.
