The “Massacres à Bourdeaux”, possible cause of the late eviction of the “Servitude volontaire” from Montaigne’s Essays

If the Servitude volontaire did not take place in the Essais, it is perhaps on the entreaties of Millanges. Two days before the date of the privilege, the Parliament of Bordeaux had threatened with hanging any bookseller who would put on sale the Mémoires of the Protestant Goulart where this anonymous Discours was found. Added in 1578, it is rather the piece Massacres à Bourdeaux and its long list of massacrers which, deemed “scandalous and defamatory”, could have the collection condemned to fire.
