Montaigne, annotator of a legal reform project? In dialogue with François Rouget

In a recent article (BSIAM 69, 2019 – 1), François Rouget published the complete transcription of a manuscript from 1584, which details a judicial reform project in Béarn. The attached illustrations reproduce nine notes that can be attributed to Montaigne. Created in response to the author’s questions on the subject, this note, while commending its prudence, shows that these notes are not originals and might even be forgeries.
