The shadow of Cinq-Mars Vigny in the first Revue de Paris (1829–1834)

Despite its importance, Vigny never once published in the Revue de Paris between 1829 and 1834. No doubt he did not want to have an article printed with his name on it, which the Revue required at the time. But this was only a partial absence because the Revue covered each of his works, which were always compared unfavorably to Cinq-Mars. Vigny was expected to write a new historical novel or a true historical drama, and there were those who lamented that he did not make more use of his talent as a painter of the historical.
