Even after leaving Breton’s Surrealist movement in 1947, Bonnefoy’s work continued to take up some of its objectives. One of the main ones being the revival of certain religious dynamics of spiritual transformation through poetry. Making use of alchemical elements in his poetics, Bonnefoy’s hope remained that of a “transmutation” in the use of language. And his goal remained a “Revolution (in) the Night” whose consequences would shake the whole of humanity.
