This opening text takes the form of an interview with two anonymous voices that seek to discern some defining elements of the horrible. The task is difficult insofar as the object to be defined is precisely what tries to crush any speaking possibility. This unnamable, which even stays beyond the representable, will gradually be identified in its polymorphic expressions, following a curve that leads to a threshold beyond which the unspeakable becomes unveiling.
Keywords: unveiling, unspeakable, unnamable, unrepresentable, polyphony.
288Vincent Teixeira, “Facing the Horror”
A mere shadow of death, horror is part of our condition, represents the dark side of humanity, its accursed share. But to face the horror, to lift the veil of our inner night remains a challenge. However, the enigma of death and the enigma of beauty are conjoined abysses, and it is indeed in the heart of darkness that our aspiration to beauty arises, which is as much a desire for freedom as it is a thirst for infinity, the hope of transforming our nothingness into infinity.
Keywords: Sade, Baudelaire, Bataille, death, night, black.
Marius Dobre, “The Term ‘Horrible’ in Logical Analysis”
The article proposes a discussion from the point of view of logic about the meaning of the term “horrible” and the difficulties of defining it, about its use in sentences, in descriptions of situations, in explanations or inferences to the best explanation, about its use in correct (common or moral) argumentation and especially, given its specificity of this term loaded with a strong emotional content, about its use in incorrect argumentation.
Keywords: definition, description, explanation, correct argumentation, sophism.
Franck Colotte, “Aspects of the Horrible in Virgil’s Poetry”
The category (aesthetic, poetic and ethical) of the horrible is based on the monstrosity of humans, animals and abstract entities. From the flowing blood to the supernatural symbolic phenomenon of metamorphosis, via the allegorical evocation of certain frightening figures, this monstrosity generates a poetic observation of nature and the human psyche, an aesthetic contemplation of the universe, a meditation on history as well as a moral reflection.
Keywords: horrible, cruor, metamorphosis, monstrosity, poetry.
Force Drama and World’s Beauty According to Simone Weil”
This text, dedicated to the thought of Simone Weil, aims to show how misfortune and the experience of horror are the extreme consequence of an immoderate exercise of force, understood as one mode of the natural necessity. The purpose of Simone Weil’s reflections on human distress is to show that misfortune, by sharpening our faculty of attention, opens the way of its own excess.
Keywords: force, misfortune, beauty, labour, justice.
Lucie Doublet, “The Horrible Intuition of Georges Bataille”
Horror emerges as a central intuition in the work of Georges Bataille. It presides over eroticism, the sacred, and also poetry. This article attempts to show how the coherence of Bataillian writings is tied around this notion, in their literary, philosophical and political dimensions. Developing a true philosophy of horror, Bataille elevates this negative affection to the rank of a metaphysical experience.
Keywords: horror, eroticism, obscene, war, poetry.
María José Sánchez Usón, “Conceiving ‘the Horrible’”
In this text, we propose to understand the term “horrible” as an arcane, excessive and mysterious word that qualifies, in a superlative way, that which, surpassing the shock of man in the face of something frightening, is considered the maximum expression of what drives one mad: the materialization of what is radically evil and, consequently, the evil in its most horrifying and intense state.
Keywords: horrible, fear, monstrous, subjectivity, thinking.
Alina Bako, “Cioran, a Geocritical Reading. The Terror of Space”
This study presents the way in which Cioran relates to the Transylvanian space, considering a double finding: on the one hand an attachment sometimes denied, but always affirmed by the continuous appeal of childhood memories, therefore a topophrenic vision, and on the other hand the vision of Romanian culture as one being in the role of “subordinate”, both because of the historical domination and oppression, as well as the way of being of the Romanian people, to whom he reproaches his slowness.
Keywords: Transsylvania, topophrenic, space, geocritic, subordinate.
Saber Idoudi, “Horrible Metamorphoses in Cioran’s Works”
The horrible is intrinsic to Cioran’s works. In the first writings in Romanian, it espouses the overwhelming lyricism of the young writer. The result is terrorist and apocalyptic thinking. In Syllogisms of bitterness, associated with a systematic search for the paradox, it becomes a source of aesthetic enjoyment. In the latest works, it expresses an authentic mystical quest.
Keywords: Cioran, horrible, vitality, frivolity, mystic.
Jean Marc Sourdillon, “The Gift of Light”
Through the reading of a tribute to Philippe Jaccottet and, indirectly, to Friedrich Hölderlin, and through the story of the meeting between a man and his work, we find that poetry, defined as the way to spread light in words and in life, is less the product of an invention, than it is the object of a transmission.
Keywords: Jaccottet, Hölderlin, poetry, light, vocation, transmission.
Hervé Ferrage, “Friendships of Philippe Jaccottet”
Friendship is a wise passion which is crucial for Jaccottet. Among other examples one can mention his enduring loyalty to his master Gustave Roud, to such poets as Pierre-Albert Jourdan and Henri Thomas, or to painters. In the light of his last published book, Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet, we focus here on his friendship with painters. We put it into perspective with his lifelong journey and his dream of a desirable but fragile harmony, which art in its most diverse expressions can point to.
Keywords: friendship, art, poetry, interiority, simplicity.
Judith Chavanne, « Après beaucoup d’années… »
Judith Chavanne, “After Many Years…”
The poetry of Jaccottet starts by a disinterested attention to the world characterized by a contemplation which is not subordinated to the poem. The world in itself demands our attention. The poem will follow (or not) from a moment of interior coherence which guarantees its justness. Thus writing is a hatching of experience which, in Jaccottet’s poetry comes always first. His poetry is an invitation both to be and to love.
Keywords: experience, connected, interiorization, attention, justness.
What experience do we have reading Philippe Jaccottet? It is like following a road which leads to a simple and unexpected world born from a combination of visible and invisible. It is like learning to be “ignorant”, like renouncing speech in favor of the words of beings, the signs of the things.
Keywords: event, ignorance, Truinas, path, transmission.
294Philippe Macaigne, “Uncertainty of a River Bank. On the Work of Philippe Jaccottet”
Encountering light by chance and only for an instant is like a declination of the shadow. The shadow highlights it without being able to put it away farther than this evidence – a doubtful order – with a fragility that may be the essence of crossing.
Keywords: Jaccottet, shadow, trembling, crossing, equilibrium.
Jean-Pierre Lemaire, “The Little Bell of Vespers”
The title of Philippe Jaccottet’s last work, La Clarté Notre-Dame, calls for a religious interpretation. The references to the universe of Dante, the convergence of signs received during his life and also the reminiscences from his favorite poets, especially Hölderlin, are harmoniously linked to the ringing of “the little bell of vespers” of Clarté Notre-Dame: this “seemingly meaning” comforts him in his quest for salvation “towards and in opposition to all.”
Keywords: signs, convergence, religious, clarity, salvation.
295Fabien Vasseur, “A Voice Returning to the Choir”
According to Philippe Jaccottet, “to speak with the voice of the day” (L’Ignorant) was not a poetic program, but a mission: to make us hear what is not speech-endowed, to pass on the song of the earth, the cries of the world. His poetry thus aspired to become music. His voice escaped from the universal choir, then he sang his part before returning there; and the continuous dialogue between the living and the dead goes on…
Keywords: poet, voice, music, world, universal.
Madeleine Brossier, “On the Motion and Immobility of Doubt. Scepticism and Minerality in Philippe Jaccottet’s Work”
Philippe Jaccottet advocates uncertainty on many occasions, thus following in the footsteps of the sceptic minds who promote movement. However, he also knows the torments that lie with doubt – as is underlined with the metaphor of the abyss. As a result, the concept of immobility fluctuates. Is it vain apraxia, a desired anchoring, or the denial of movement that enables it, paradoxically, to exist? These variations in his work will be analyzed through the imagery of the stone.
Keywords: Jaccottet, skepticism, doubt, stone, poetry.
Mihaela-Genţiana Stănişor, “An Interview with Claude Le Manchec”
Bousquet urges us not to insist on his immobility due to a serious wound. We are urged to consider him first as a poet in search of a new and moving language, the author of a work with a supple and complex frame produced by a mixture of thematic forces, dreamlike or novelistic elements. By these means he tries to “escape his loss.” “I live with the hope that I have something to reveal”, he writes.
Keywords: war, autobiography, fragment, editor, isolation.
Michel Lambert, “I Am Here”
Two men meet each other by chance in a café after twenty years passed since they went at the same high school. At another table, a woman cries and distracts them from a lingering conversation.
Keywords: reunions, revenge, culpability, cruelness, mystery.
Maxime Caron, “Image of Dionysus”
When a god of mythology interferes with the private sphere of a passer-by is it something to consider or on the contrary? The author narrates a fortuitous meeting which takes on the aspect of a epiphany.
Keywords: mythology, passer-by, private, voyage, bus.
Constantin Zaharia, “The Inconsistencies of the Stylographe II”
Something grotesque interferes with the imagination of things not yet meant to be seen, of things which are about to come in spite of the doxa built in order to oppose free and non-syntactic expression of thought.
Keywords: imagination, grotesque, rumor, fair, disorder.
The author proposes some misanthropic reflections on human nature.
Keywords: Napoleon, Oblomov, Kafka, Torquemada, Luther.
Myriam Eck, Carole Forget, “Starting from the Poem of the Wall by Antoine Emaz”
Carole Forget and Myriam Eck met each other at a public lecture during Marché de la poésie in Paris, 2018. During their talks about their common poetic territory, 298they entertained the idea of starting a dialogue by means of poetry. This manuscript started from a poem by Antoine Emaz, Poème du mur, which both of them found inspiring by its style. The tutelary image of Antoine Emaz marks this project which takes the form of both a tribute and a way of knowing each other better.
Keywords: poem, Emaz, dialogue, language, tribute.

Critics note nobility and sophistication, a sense of proportion and style, as well as the poet’s special gift of capturing the ordinary as extraordinary. A dream or melancholy transformed into a dream is a fine line of experience and contradictions that is characteristic of this poetry.
Keywords: time, hope, tenderness, poetry, consolation.
Stéphane Cermakian, “Night of Horror – Night of Grace”
Night of horror, when Turkey decided to undertake the genocide against the Armenians and to extend the shadow of denial to all mankind. The poem reveals 299the voice that tried to remain hidden until today and to continue its crime. But the night of grace is stronger than the horror; the stations of the cross precede the paschal resurrection, where justice blossoms in all its dimensions, and the poem seeks to make them heard through its sovereign voice.
Keywords: genocide, night, justice, Easter, resurrection.
