How can a writer talk or write about silence ? Some consider silence as the source that precedes all language. Others focus on ‘silent conversations’ in which ideas are exchanged. Most of the time, silences make speech opaque and heavy. But what if ‘silence and speech [were] the same thing’ (Coetzee) ?
