Cosmopolitan Vocation, Confessional Belonging and National Identity Among the Theoreticians of the Grand Tour at the End of the 16th and Beginning of the 17th Centuries

This article analyses how cosmopolitanism, religious affiliation and national identity are associated in the early 17th century by Thomas Pelletier and Pietro Andrea Canonhiero, two of the first authors to set out, more or less explicitly, the programme of the Grand Tour. Their divergent positions agree on the importance of travel and foreign experience as essential means of training young noblemen and future servants of the state.
