“Plus ung austre estuy ou il y a une chenne…” Jewelry within the Domestic Space during the Renaissance

As ceremonial objects on show for all to see, during the Renaissance jewelry constituted not only financial capital—hence the care taken in its conservation—but also symbolic capital, embodying objects simultaneously intended for the individual and for others. Drawing on archival, material, iconographic, and textual sources, this article focuses on the domestic aspect of jewelry by studying how it was kept in the noble domus, which often blurred the lines between the public and the private.
