In Search of Isabella d’Este’s Camerino in Mantua Three Spaces for Two Self-Representations?

Throughout her life, Isabella d’Este worked continuously to perfect the interior of her Camerino or Studiolo. Very early on, she stored her precious objects in a room adjoining her apartments. Some years later, she opened a second room, the Grotta. Finally, in a change of residence, she converted her Camerino into a series of three rooms. This study focuses on the different roles attributed to these spaces by the Marchioness of Mantua over time as possible representations of herself.
