To Build a “Straight Wall of Stone and Lime” The Paradigm Shift in Standard Construction Practices in Late Medieval Portugal

This article focuses on changes in building practices during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Portugal. The discussion focuses on whether, as in other European regions, Portugal experienced what some authors have called the “petrification of urban construction,” or in other words whether stone gained prominence over other materials and how this led to structural changes.
