Paul Bleton, “East-European Crime and Mystery Fiction in French”
For more than three decades, the genre centered on social dysfunction has offered a representation of Central and Eastern European cultures that are quite diverse but which are all reacting to the political trauma of occasioned by the fall of the Eastern block. An overview of more than 460 crime novels. For the reader, the importation and translation of titles from these countries constitutes a system–including novels from the East before the fall of the Berlin Wall as well as those by Western authors published in French or in French translation.
Keywords: crime and mystery novels, since 1989, countries of the former Eastern block, French translations
Désiré Nyela, “Murders in the Cold Country: Siberia in noir”
If the countries of the former Soviet bloc have been the source of crime stories by local authors, they have also been a source of inspiration for authors from the West, whose vision has also contributed to the representation of the East in crime literature. This is the case of Caryl Férey, whose novel Lëd takes the reader to Siberia, more precisely to Norilsk, the northernmost territory on earth, whose inhospitality is commensurate with the social and criminal dynamics that are expressed there.
Keywords: Norilsk, Siberia, post-Soviet Russia, social crime, parrhesia, Dolia, tragic heroism
Isabelle-Rachel Casta, « Nordic Noir, adieu ! Une Russie rétrofuturiste ? »
Alors, « go east » ?
Mots-clés : rétrofuturisme, dieselpunk, mystères, parodie, ostalgie, uchronie.
Isabelle-Rachel Casta, “Nordic Noir, Goodbye! A Retrofuturistic Russia?”
Forgeries, real noir novels falsely translated, uchronic fantasies or fictitious police memoirs… The East is fertile in unbridled inspiration, carried by specialists of the popular, who do not finish reconfiguring a Russia of dreams and fears, imaginary conservatory of monsters and fairies. So, “go east”?
Keywords: retrofuturism, dieselpunk, mysteries, parody, ostalgy, uchrony
Christiane Connan-Pintado, “On the Margins of Crime Fiction, in the Heart of Ukraine, with Andreï Kourkov”
The novels of Andrei Kurkov, a Ukrainian author who writes in Russian, can be linked to the genre of detective fiction. They borrow some features from it to paint the situation of his country since the fall of the Berlin Wall. He focuses on the intersecting destinies of characters who are struggling in a world where the absurd reigns supreme : one can have a penguin for a pet ; one negotiates one ’ s survival by slipping between ordinary schemes, mafia machinations and political corruption of all kinds.
Keywords: Andreï Kourkov, detective novel, eastern European countries, absurd, humor
Paul Bleton, « Drôles de râles. Mimétique/ludique : un couple désassorti ? »
Paul Bleton, “Funny Moaning. Mimetic/Ludic: A Mismatched Couple?”
A tension characterizes the history of the genre between play and seriousness, between playfulness and mimetics. However, if seriousness and mimeticism tend to dominate since the hard-boiled thriller, Eastern thrillers do not neglect play and playfulness. This is manifested by situations of païdia and ludus, by writing games, by self-reference, and by various forms of narrative virtuosity.
Keywords: play, serious, ludic, mimetic, paidia, ludus, writing games, self-referenc, narrative virtuosity
Paul Bleton, “You are sure taking your sweet time! Chronotope, Mono- and Polychronies, Temporalities and Reading Hang-ups”
Time is created by fiction in a subtle layering: 1/ Thematization of chronotopes: from the evidence of past periods made explicit and structuring to the almost complete implicitation of the historical context or a structuring by an intimate, phenomenological time, and not by a socially shared and assignable time. 2/ The number of periods summoned by the fiction. 3/ The different pragmatic configurations of adjustment of the temporalities. 4/ “Vertical hullabaloo”, and the materiality of hooks at the level of the reading.
Keywords: periods as themes, homogeneous time, braided times, pragmatic configurations of temporalities, reading act incidents, temporal indices
429Paul Bleton, “Isn’t there a ‘Counter’ in ‘Encounter’? Transmitters, Intercultural Clichés, Places and Modalities of Contact”
Translated novels (Eastern thrillers, and Western thrillers about Eastern Europ) draw attention to the way in which cultural encounters are evoked in this foreign literary production: 1/ the embodiment of the status of the passer-by; 2/ the use of cross-cultural clichés; 3/ the universes in which the plots impose cross-cultural encounters (in the East? in the West?); 4/ the powerful generic magnetism of the Anglosphere. On the one hand, Eastern novels are a tiny proportion of the novels translated into French. On the other hand, they are distributed between two poles: their national universe and their desire to join a globalization of criminal narrative fiction.
Keywords: cross-cultural encounters, smuggler, cross-cultural clichés, fictional universes, Anglosphere, globalization
Paul Bleton, « L’Eau rouge.
Paul Bleton, “Red Water. What Realism does the Globalized Crime Fiction Market require?”
In the West, following the civil wars, Serbia and Croatia are represented as dark places. The duo Christian Schünemann / Jelena Volić challenges such cliché-fueled uniformity from within. Among the codes of universalization of crime fiction, we examine the original path of naturalism adopted by Jurica Pavičić.
Keywords: Serbia, Croatia, bicultural novels, realism, naturalism, globalization
Paul Bleton and Sándor Kálai, “Hungarian Disarray. Hungarian Crime according to Western, Bicultural, and Hungarian Writers”
A triple view of Hungary: that of Western novelists, that of two Hungarian novelists writing, one in French (Radványi) and the other in English (Fagyas), as well as that of Hungarian novelists translated from Magyar. The latter are presented as a continuum, starting from a generic core (American-style urban thriller, teenage noir) and moving away from it (ironic treatment of the whodunit?, criminal enigma governed by another novelistic structure, revelation upsetting a family history).
Keywords: Hungary, western novels, Hungarian authors writing in a western language, Hungarian authors writing in Magyar
Paul Bleton, “In the Hands of Romanian Witnesses. Romanian Crime according to Western, Bicultural, and Romanian Writers”
Wherein we examine Romania as represented in French (Gontard, Dozsa, Slocombe, Jonquet, Koudero) and Canadian (Bolduc, Thornley) crime and detective novels. Chirovici and Duca, bicultural authors whose plots avoid their Romanian origins and distinguish themselves both from other bicultural novelists (such as the visceral 431 anti-communist Gheorghiu, the sarcastic Audet-Găinar, or Bogdan who co-wrote a novel with a French author, and Lortchenkov the Russian from Moldova) and also from Romanian novelists. If Romanian genre fiction before 1989 remains largely unknown in French, a few titles were however heralds of things to come (Sadoveanu, Rebreanu, Maïlat.
Keywords: crime and mystery novels, Romania, globalization
Paul Bleton, “Polish Style–Sex, Power and Greed. Ancient, Contemporary, Historical and Post-Modern Thriller”
Compared to other eastern cultures, it is mainly the national genre that fictionalizes Polish crime. It has a long tradition, mainly untranslated in French. During the People ’ s Republic, it was mainly non-serial works that passed this barrier, while distinguishing themselves from the generic clichés of the time (Tyrmand, Mackiewicz, Gombrowicz). During the Third Republic, for contemporary narratives, new generic conventions served as a stepping stone not only for a Nobel Prize winner like Tokarczuk but also for serial writers (Miłoszewski, Chmielarz, Zulczyk.
