“Guides” and “repertories” have been part of Balzac studies since the nineteenth century. Because of the systematicity of Balzacian thought, these traditional specialist tools anticipated in many respects the logic of the digital humanities and, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, included databases structured in the form of reference books.
