Gérard de Nerval belongs to the main translators of Heinrich Heine’s poems though he preferred to provide a prose text and let the German poet take part in the process of translation. Heine despised the French metrics but wanted to be perceived as the original author of the French version and pretended to write self-translations. He was on the other hand well informed about the topics of Nerval’s poetry so that passages of Heine’s poems could be considered as adaptions of Nerval.
