Abstract: It is not uncommon for fairytales to be rewritten, either as parody or as reappropriation. The collection In the Belly of the Whale adopts neither of these options; instead, what is foregrounded in these books is formal experimentation and a desire to trouble the connection between text and image. Reading these remakes offers us a new experience: fragments of the originals, stored in our memory, are retrieved and see their tragic substratum unexpectedly brought to light.
