  • Abstract: Laroui’s work is known for its focus on the place of the individual in society, whom it gradually situates within History, which simultaneously overwhelms and transcends the individual. The element of the ridiculous initially concerns the individual and the social, but this changes when we consider History, which transforms the novelistic stage into a tragedy of civilizations, particularly with reference to jihadism. The ridiculous instead manifests in the position of the individual who is cheated by History.
