Abstract: In contrast with Là-bas, the unfinished novel Là-haut sees Durtal set out in search of the Bon Lieu in the sweeping heights of La Salette. On arrival, the amateur pilgrim is disenchanted, because up there is also a there, a place of discomfort. His project of solitary seclusion in a cell fails for different reasons: arid natural surroundings, ugliness of the site itself, unilateral confinement.
