Abstract: In my Paul Valéry et l'acte de traduire, I have emphasized a number of key aspects of Valéry’s theory and practice in the field of translation. My analysis here will focus more specifically on the nature of certain “refusals” inherent in this intellectual process: that kind of “jusqu’au boutisme” associated with a powerful inhibiting but also positive feeling that characterises his creative act where doing and feeling are in constant interaction.
