Abstract: The opportunity to study allowed women to discover new literary genres, the essay being one of them. The article presents how two German essayists – Alice Rühle-Gerstel (1894-1943) and Margarete Susman (1872-1966) – exploited the knowledge acquired in the course of studies or owing to their university contacts in a subjective way.
