Abstract: Zen master Dōgen (1200-1253) is known and celebrated for his innovative methods of rereading and rewording Chinese Buddhist literature. Closer examination of the textual genealogies of these materials reveals multiple layers of textual transformation. They demonstrate that Dōgen was a participant in a vibrant culture of rereading and rewording received texts.
