  • Abstract: The Wanshi Stream was a very important and intricate crossover movement that reveals the impact of Chinese Chan institutions and poetic discourse on Zen Buddhism in early medieval Japan. Based on translations of poems from the fourteenth century as well as an historical analysis of the period, this paper challenges the conventional view that Wanshi Stream monks were Sōtō sect followers in name only by showing that lineal loyalties were quite complicated.
