Abstract: This article examines contemporary speculative novels addressing the issue of food security through the practice of permaculture, a mode of sustainable agriculture that maintains ecosystems and enhances the ability to adapt to climate change. These novels are inspired by ecocritical precepts, creating a new genre, that of a “permacultural” fiction, where the characters are permaculturists militantly (sometimes) involved, out of sheer optimism, in actions aimed at preserving the environment.
