Abstract: Bloy and Mirbeau, both harsh critics of the bourgeois spirit, make their bourgeois characters speak in commonplaces to reveal their stupidity. In Bloy’s work, the interpretation of bourgeois platitudes also underpins their refusal to submit to God, while Mirbeau’s work thus brings to light the hidden injustice of society.
