Stefan Zweig, Jean Giraudoux, Marc Bloch : trois destinées tragiques à des degrés divers, confrontées à l’effondrement des rêveries humanistes et au déferlement de l’instinct avivé par le nationalisme. Chez Zweig et Giraudoux les fractures de l’histoire recoupent des lignes de faille intimes (enfance exaltée et sacrifiée, parole confisquée). Ce qui réunit Bloch et Giraudoux tout en les différenciant, c’est la nécessité et la difficulté de raffermir la conscience républicaine.

Stefan Zweig, Jean Giraudoux, and Marc Bloch: three tragic fates to varying degrees, all three faced with the collapse of humanist dreams and the surge of instinct fueled by nationalism. In Zweig and Giraudoux, the fractures of history intersect with highly personal fault lines (exalted and sacrificed childhood, confiscated speech). What unites Bloch and Giraudoux while differentiating them is the necessity and the difficulty of strengthening the French republican conscience.

Vincent Brancourt, « La tentation du monde ou la rêverie d’un petit bourgeois »

À l’intérieur de l’imaginaire giralducien, le mot « bourgeoisie » occupe une place paradoxale et ambigüe. La bourgeoisie ou plus spécifiquement la petite bourgeoisie est le lieu originaire où est éprouvée une certaine médiocrité du réel que les personnages chercheront à fuir au profit du « monde », univers dont l’éclat les séduit. Mais à cette fuite succède un retour, parfois résigné, parfois assumé, vers un réel dont les limites et la finitude sont finalement acceptées.

Vincent Brancourt, “Worldly temptation or the reverie of a petit bourgeois”

Within the Giralducian imagination, the word “bourgeoisie” occupies a paradoxical and ambiguous position. The bourgeoisie or more specifically the petty bourgeoisie is the original site where a certain mediocrity of reality is experienced that characters will try to flee in favor of the “world,” a universe whose brightness seduces them. But this flight is followed by a return to a reality with set limits and finitude, whether with resignation or acceptance.

Christian Leroy, « Père(s) et fils chez Jean Giraudoux, d’un deuil à l’autre. (Histoire, Société, Littérature) »

Entre les écrits d’avant 1914 et les productions des années 1930-1940, les rapports entre père(s) et fils ont évolué chez Giraudoux d’une configuration 299œdipienne au deuil assumé des prétentions paternelles. L’émergence historique d’un pouvoir féminin dont les héroïnes giralduciennes sont l’image et l’acceptation, via l’expérience théâtrale, d’un transfert au public du pouvoir créateur en sont la cause. Loin de tout fantasme de verticalité l’image d’une horizontalité fraternelle va ainsi s’imposer.

Christian Leroy, “Father(s) and son(s) in Jean Giraudoux, from one mourning to another. (History, Society, Literature)”

Between the pre-1914 writings and the output of 1930–1940, the relationship between father(s) and son(s) evolved in Giraudoux from an Oedipal configuration to the acceptance that comes with mourning paternal ambitions. The cause of this is the historical emergence of a feminine power of which the Giraudoux heroines constitute the image and the acceptance, via the theatrical experience of a transfer of creative power to the public. Far from any fantasy of verticality, the image of a fraternal horizontality will thus impose itself.

Yves Landerouin, « Oscar Wilde et Combat avec l’image »

Les rapports entre l’œuvre de Giraudoux et celle de Wilde sont envisagés selon un angle inhabituel : celui de la critique, dont la pratique chez l’écrivain français est loin d’être seulement tributaire d’une approche déterministe. Combat avec l’image peut être lu comme une magistrale illustration de la théorie développée dans The Critic as Artist (1891) et ces pages inspirées, à travers leur teneur autobiographique, éclairent le dessin de Foujita d’une lumière vivifiante.

Yves Landerouin, “Oscar Wilde and Combat avec l’image”

The relationship between Giraudoux ’ s work and that by Wilde is considered from an unusual perspective: criticism, whose practice by the French writer is far from being solely dependent on a deterministic approach. Combat avec l ’ image can be read as a masterly illustration of the theory developed in The Critic as Artist (1891) and these inspired pages, through their autobiographical content, shed an invigorating light on Foujita ’ s drawing.

Walter Wagner, « Jean Giraudoux, prophète de la crise écologique ? »

Cet article analyse l’écologisme de Giraudoux pour établir si l’auteur peut être qualifié de prophète de la crise écologique. Même si son œuvre présente des affinités avec ce courant de pensée, l’auteur ne prévoit pas les défis environnementaux actuels avec la pollution tous azimuts, le réchauffement climatique, l’extinction des espèces, etc., mais se contente de faire le bilan des dégâts écologiques et esthétiques dus à la modernisation de la France de l’entre-deux-guerres.

Walter Wagner, “Jean Giraudoux, a prophet of the ecological crisis?”

This article analyzes Giraudoux ’ s environmentalism to establish whether the author can be called a prophet of the ecological crisis. Even if his work shares affinities with this current of thought, the author does not foresee the current environmental challenges with all its forms of pollution, global warming, species extinction, etc., but simply takes stock of the ecological and aesthetic damage caused by the modernization of interwar France.

Les trois conférences de La Française et la France sont étudiées à partir de deux points de vue : les idées et le style : sa définition de la femme, son approche du machinisme, l’art du conférencier, ses modalités rhétoriques propres à convaincre son auditoire de la validité de ses arguments, ainsi qu’à son recours fréquent à un style poétique qui accorde une dimension quasi mythique à la femme.

The three lectures found in La Française et la France are studied from two points of view: ideas and style: his definition of “woman,” his approach to machinism, the 301 art of the lecturer, his rhetorical methods of convincing his audience of the validity of his arguments, as well as his frequent recourse to a poetic style that grants a quasi-mythical dimension to women.

Giraudoux a consacré, en 1934, un cycle de trois conférences à l’Université des Annales au sujet d’ensemble La Française et la France. Son idée directrice est que dans une période de crise de civilisation, les qualités reconnues aux hommes ne suffisent plus à sauver l’essentiel : la santé, la culture, le bonheur, la paix. Il y faut l’action complémentaire de la femme, avec ses qualités propres. Cet article contextualise et analyse les conférences et y ajoute quelques réflexions.

In 1934, Giraudoux devoted a series of three conferences at the University of the Annals to the general topic of La Française et la France. His guiding idea was that in a period of civilizational crisis, the qualities recognized in men were no longer sufficient to save what was fundamental: health, culture, happiness, and peace. The concerted auxiliary effort of women is needed, with their own qualities. This article contextualizes and analyzes the conferences and adds some reflections.

In what way can two dramaturgies and two personalities as dissimilar as those of Giraudoux and Eduardo De Filippo reveal touchstones that allow a rereading of each in the light of the other and the discovery of thematic and poetic affinities? From the Pirandellian parallelism that unites these two works, here is a reflection on the twofold plane of poetics and language, their similar conceptions of writing, and the goals of the art of theater.

La présence de Giraudoux dans les manuels de littérature française en Italie est très réduite. Cette étude a pour objectif d’analyser des manuels de littérature française destinés aux lycéens italiens des années 90 jusqu’à nos jours : présence de Giraudoux dans les textes, analyse de l’espace qui lui est accordé ainsi qu’aspects évoqués (romancier, dramaturge, critique). Cette recherche veut sensibiliser les auteurs et les éditeurs car Giraudoux n’a pas obtenu le succès qu’il mérite.

Giraudoux ’ s presence in French literature textbooks in Italy is very minor. The aim of this study is to analyze French literature textbooks for Italian high school students from the 1990s to the present day, in particular looking at the presence of Giraudoux in the texts, the space attributed to him, and the roles described (novelist, playwright, critic). This research wants to increase authors ’ and publishers ’ awareness of this because Giraudoux has not won the success he deserves.

From a translational perspective, based on the choices made by the translator in the light of the intrinsic functioning of Choix des Élues , our analysis of the Italian version of this novel aims to illustrate–along with linguistic and stylistic reflections on the recreation of Giraudoux ’ s writing–the textual difficulties involved in its culturally rooted dimensions, the inevitable recourse to notes, and the creative reinvention of certain key passages.

Born at the turn of the century near Bellac, Vialatte discovered Giraudoux at the end of the Great War. Still a student, he passionately defended him in his correspondence, declaring his admiration for his war stories; editor of the Revue rhénane , he wrote a brilliant review of Siegfried et le Limousin . He viewed him as a poet who had “changed the coordinates of the world,” and his influence was decisive in the formation of his aesthetic; he also often pastiched him.

Arnaud Teyssier, a 1978 graduate of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS), “gravitated toward Giraudoux by way of the theater,” but regularly rereads his novels–in particular Suzanne et le Pacifique –and has read Pleins Pouvoirs closely. He sees in Giraudoux the “absolute literary man” who seduced Georges Pompidou while admiring his “dazzling intuitions” on the State and the administration of France, which echo the thoughts of General de Gaulle; like Péguy, he seems to be a witness to a “French kind of humanity.”
