Abstract: The relationship between Giraudoux’s work and that by Wilde is considered from an unusual perspective: criticism, whose practice by the French writer is far from being solely dependent on a deterministic approach. Combat avec l’image can be read as a masterly illustration of the theory developed in The Critic as Artist (1891) and these inspired pages, through their autobiographical content, shed an invigorating light on Foujita’s drawing.
