Abstract: Giraudoux’s play pits native literalists against Protestants, for whom appearances are always opposed to reality and for whom a sign must always differ from what it signifies. With this tale, the playwright aims to engage in a reflection on the nature of theater as a metaphorical art of true illusion. He hints that the tragic absurdities of colonialism are the result of the apparently flawed mindset of colonial power.
