Abstract: In Germany in the 1730s, conceptions and perceptions of the sublime as an oratory style influenced some works in musical theory and criticism. J. A. Scheibe in particular, in his review Critischer Musikus, sought to emulate two reputed rhetoricians, the erudite S. Werenfels and his famous professor of eloquence at Leipzig, J. Ch. Gottsched.
