Gide wrote in Si le grain ne meurt: “Not in one of the biographies, […] do I manage to find the least indication of the maternal origin of a great man, a great hero.” Today, this omission has been rectified. An entry in the Dictionnaire Gide is devoted to Juliette Rondeaux-Gide and refers to the account books of André Gide’s mother. This article returns to these archival documents, which contain much of interest for the history of women as well as the history of mothers.
