Gide’s period of engagement as demonstrated in La NRF, with its evolutions at the religious, political, and nationalist level during the First World War, can only be understood if one begins by returning to the first years of this journal’s existence. Gide’s engagement, as opposed to that of Sartre and the intellectuals of the 1950s, first took shape as action and only subsequently, and partially, transformed itself into theoretical reflection.
