Interiority, as represented in five Scènes de la vie parisienne, is manufactured and put into play by seductive speech. These manipulations speak volumes about Balzac’s conception of inner life: the ego, far from being absolute, is engaged in a series of more or less intentional transformations, operating at different scales. It appears to be a porous space tuned to the modulations of intersubjective exchange, sociohistorical context, and the passions.
