“Order”, “reason”, and “conscience” are concepts central both to Rousseau's philosophy and his own way of life. Through the ideal of society, Rousseau is able to reflect on these values, and also express his identity as a writer in the social and intellectual life of his time. By doing this, he distances himself from the notion of “utopia” in the strict sense of the word.
