The collection Poëmes saturniens has multiple intertextual connections with Les Contemplations. The example of the poem “Sérénade” shows that Verlaine’s relationship with the poetry of Victor Hugo is not only one of parody. Rather, for Verlaine, it is a question of unburdening lyric poetry of the sublime, while creating a poetics of withdrawal—withdrawal of the subject from dire reality, withdrawal of enunciation from poetic forms that are incapable of expressing the sense of lack, and withdrawal of the poet from his poem.
