“L’Âme antique. . .” (Sagesse) offers, in a Parnassian form and in opposition to the ancient myth, a Mariology that is only later elevated to a dogma. This Mary, protected from all sin, takes her place as co-savior beside Christ, thereby reinforcing the Papacy’s condemnation of Protestant Christocentrism. Theological literature and the comparison with Nicolas Lenau’s Lutheran verse drama, Savonarole, prove the high degree of reflection in Verlaine’s religious poetry.
