Foreword to Paul Verlaine, Gedichte I The problems of producing this translation and why it has been completed nonetheless

This article, translated into French, reproduces the foreword to Paul Verlaine’s Gedichte I, which was published in Germany in 2018. It is based on the observation that there is no classic German translation of Verlaine’s poetry, and on the real difficulty of finding an appropriate meter, that would be the German equivalent of the French alexandrine. It offers some solutions in order to reproduce the metrical variety of Verlaine’s work, while respecting his phrasing, syntax, and punctuation.
