In “L’aîle où je suis…,” one of his Vieux Coppées composed toward the beginning of 1874 (entitled “Tantalized” in Jadis and Naguère), Verlaine, a prisoner in Mons, represents himself as subject to the torture of Tantalus. Several details from this text could have inspired the verses found in “Juillet” (Rimbaud) generally dated 1872.
