The Vilez-Verlaine collection includes a number of publications related to la malédiction. If these works testify to the enduring legacy of the figure of the poète maudit, it is also useful to remind ourselves of its origins. Using the Bandy Center’s collections and other resources, the present study traces the development of the rich inheritance Verlaine drew on in his first studies in 1884, looking particularly at Gilbert, Malfilâtre, Chénier, and Vigny.
