The rediscovery in 2004 of the manuscript of Cellulairement, a collection of verses Verlaine composed in prison between 1873 and 1874, has allowed us to situate many of his major poems like “Sur les eaux” and “L’Art poétique” in the context of their writing, and so to reorient our interpretation of them. This study reconsiders metrical and thematic innovations in Verlaine’s poetry with regard to the tension between desire for escape and the constraints of prison.
