“Beams” is a late addition to Romances sans paroles, which contributes to the book composition by both taking the opposite way of the previous texts and taking shape in them. Though the core of the fable, the walk on water is thus the very antithesis of the drowning image that draws the first and the ninth ariettas to a close.
