The author shows the existence of a mnemic structure in Purgatorio, focusing on the very precise distribution of colorful and bright symbols, especially the smeraldo, the purpureus, and the lucerna. Along with the Bible, this symbolic architecture finds its theoretical foundations in the hierarchy of virtues in Macrobius and in the doctrine of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as according to St. Thomas Aquinas.
