This paper addresses the marxian debate on the breakdown hypothesis after Marx’s death and until the end of the 50’s. To what extent should it be related to the unsustainability of its economic development? From the beginning of the 30’s to the end of the 50’s authors, among them Friedrich Pollock, put forward the vision of an “Orwellian” capitalism, in which emerge new forms of domination, rooted in ideology and politics rather than in economics.
