This article deals with the enigma of the book to come by basing its observations on an excerpt from Le Temps retrouvé. This text, in which the narrator evokes his project by means of a series of comparisons, confronts the reader with an ambiguity. If the characters who appear evoke a mise-en-abyme of the novel, a more thorough analysis reveals that Marcel Proust contrasts an ideal book with the future book of the narrator. From this dissociation are born two complementary projections, foreshadowing the Recherche without completely embodying it.
