In addition to a few references to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Marcel Proust’s work, which fertilize an aesthetic influenced by Wilhelm Meister and Les Affinités électives in particular, this article questions the affinities between these two authors, in particular in terms of novel-construction and the criticism that, bringing these two authors together, has put the contours and limits of the Bildungsroman in perspective vis-à-vis the question of the “I” and its literary construction.
