Dead two decades before Dreyfus’ arrest, Michelet was quite present during the Affair, in particular because of the centennial of his birth, which was celebrated in the midst of the Dreyfus crisis. In “‘L’affaire Lemoine’ par Michelet” (1908), Marcel Proust mentions the case from the anti-Dreyfusard point of view for the first time, looking back at the medieval persecution of the Jews. A careful examination of this text will make it possible to grasp the critical, polemic and even political nature of Proust’s intertextual practices.
