In the course of his work on Proust’s Correspondance, Philip Kolb made numerous discoveries about the process of Proustian creation. Kolb’s discoveries have furthered our knowledge of Proust’s work in three particular fields: the author’s rapport with his work, the construction of his characters based on multiple models, and the panoramic structure of the novel.
William Carter, professeur émérite de français à l’université d’Alabama de Birmingham, a publié The Proustian Quest (New York, 1992), Marcel Proust : A Life (New Haven, 2000) et Proust in Love (New Haven, 2006).

Life (New Haven, 2000), and Proust in Love (New Haven, 2006). He is the co-producer of the documentary film Marcel Proust: A Writer’s Life.
Proust’s progress towards his great work can be read as a series of tests relating to the choice of literary genre. Throughout his juvenilia, lived experience is transformed into a variety of scenes for the great novel, and the birth of a characteristic ‘voice’ – the voice which has become what we name the ‘Proustian narrator’.

She has published studies on the Nouvelle Revue française, on Proust as a journalist, and on the representation of the French press in À la recherche du temps perdu.
Proust’s death constituted a precarious moment which served as a form of ‘editor’, creating an arbitrary end to the extent that the author disappeared, and affecting the ontological status of the writing. The textual divergences between two publications, the 1987 Grasset edition and the 1992 Champion Slatkine edition, relate to an epistemological question: that of the narrator searching for the answer to the question of whether Albertine is, or is not, homosexual.
Anthony Pugh, « La Fin de Du côté de chez Swann »
Anthony Pugh †, ancien professeur de l’université du Nouveau-Brunswick, a notamment publié un guide aux manuscrits de Proust entre 1909 et 1914, The Growth of À la recherche du temps perdu (Toronto, 2004) et The Birth of À la recherche du temps perdu (Lexington, 1987). M. Pugh est décédé en 2004.
Anthony Pugh, a former professor of the University of New-Brunswick, published a guide to Proust’s manuscripts between 1909 and 1914, The Growth of À la recherche du temps perdu (Toronto, 2004) and The Birth of À la recherche du temps perdu (Lexington, 1987). M. Pugh died in 2004.
For commercial reasons, Proust was forced to finish Du côté de chez Swann in an artificial manner, creating editorial problems. The three scenes of walks to the Bois de Boulogne went through a series of anguished revisions in the pre-texts, changing places as if in a strange dance. An original remedy can be suggested for Proust’s solution, which was certainly not the best from the aesthetic point of view.
Nathalie Mauriac Dyer, a researcher at the Institute of modern texts and manuscripts at the National centre for scientific research in Paris, and the great-grand-niece of Proust, is a specialist in the posthumous texts of À la recherche du temps perdu. She has published, amongst other works, Proust inachevé (Paris, 2005).
In Albertine disparue, Proust revisits the fin-de-siècle stereotype of the ‘Venice ruin’ by way of allusions to the fall of the Campanile de Saint-Marc, the final scene of the Sole mio audition, the ice cream episode in La Prisonnière, and futurist resonances. From 1919, the intensification of this theme can be observed, as well as its performative return to the genesis of the episode, where editorial repairs mask its unfinished status.

Plunging into the heart of Proust’s world reveals the centrality of suffering in the Recherche and brings out, at the deepest level, an unconscious text which works into us in silence. At the end of the journey, it is the Proust of Jean Santeuil who turns out to be politically neutral, while the great novel invests the Dreyfus affair with a central and radical function.
Geneviève Henrot is a professor of French language and linguistics at the University of Padua. Adopting poetic, stylistic, and thematic points of view, her research principally concerns the French twentieth century. She is the author of Pragmatique de l’anthroponyme dans À la recherche du temps perdu (Paris, 2011).
In the text of the Recherche and in the sketches dwell a hundred or so episodes of involuntary memory, defined as the particular sensation which makes the passive hero recall and relive a memory. Instead of the ecstasy associated with the best known episodes, this memory finds itself linked to transgression and suffering. The memory’s signifiers illustrate the mechanism which engages it.
Elle a notamment codirigé Rousseau and Freedom (Cambridge, 2010).

The subtle mobile of the Proustian mechanism goes from memory to creation. Before an element can become an event in the novel, it needs to be repeated. In musical terms: starting again from the beginning, da capo. When the repetitions have accrued sufficiently, slowly or imperceptibly, accumulation explodes into an event. It is through these ‘seismic shocks’ that stages of writing are produced, and through its fractures that the ‘self’ is constructed.
Elisabeth Ladenson, a professor of French and comparative literature at the University of Columbia and the editor of the Romanic Review, is the author of Proust’s Lesbianism (New York, 1999), translated into several languages. Her research focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, gender studies, cultural history, and historiography.
Gilberte’s indecent gesture in Du côté de chez Swann can make the reader err as much as the hero, who confuses the signs of social invitation with those of sexual insult, and vice versa. Three illustrations – two films and a cartoon – reproduce this gesture with a semiotic ineptness comparable to that of the hero, leading to more general questions about vision and interpretation.
Volker Roloff is a professor of Romance literature at the University of Siegen in Germany. His research focuses on intermediality (literature, theatre, and cinema), European surrealism, Proust, Sartre, Barthes, and Robbe-Grillet. He has published Proust und die Medien (Paderborn, 2005).
Reading can be an erotic act: the Recherche is at once an essay-novel on love and a novel on reading. According to the theory of mediality, sensation, desire, and knowledge are mediated though the image and the imaginary – a fundamental principle of Proust’s aesthetic, itself concerned with the equivalence of desire and love. The end of the novel stays open, its fugitive fantasies escaping the author’s control, as Odette escapes Swann’s love.
Lawrence Schehr, « Le Radar gay.
Lawrence Schehr, the former head of the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of North Carolina, finished his career as professor of French literature and gender studies at the University of Illinois. His research focused on gay culture in twentieth-century narratives and novels. M. Schehr died in 2011.
A key scene from À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs sketches the gay radar or ‘gaydar’, a neologism which refers to the ability to see – through opaque bodies and screens, desired or otherwise – the homosexuality of the other. Radar or X-ray, the gay radar is a function which Charlus possesses and with which he targets the young hero, using a physical language destined to express his homosexuality. But it is of primary importance that this language is not understood by the hero.
Françoise Leriche, « Proust, un écrivain “Art nouveau” ? »
Françoise Leriche teaches at the University of Grenoble. Combining textual genetics, intertextuality, and discourse analysis, his works, dedicated to the early twentieth century and principally to Proust, study the way the work emerged in its epoch. She is participating in the publication of Proust’s manuscripts (Cahier 26, Agenda de 1906, correspondence, etc.). Her next book, Proust polémiste, is in the process of being revised.
Despite frequent characterisations of an ‘Impressionist’ or ‘Cubist’ Proust, Proust aligned himself with the movement contemporary to his own style – art nouveau – in his ethics as much as in his conceptions of art. An intermedial stylistic perspective allows us to see the way in which, using verbal material, Proustian writing pursues the same aesthetic quest as these architects and artisans.
Diane Leonard is an associate professor and former head of the department of comparative literature at the University of North Carolina. She works on the reinscription of John Ruskin’s œuvre in the Recherche, a subject on which she has published several articles. She has collaborated on the Dictionnaire Marcel Proust (Paris, 2014).
At the deepest layer of Proustian creation lies the fundamental difference between vision and knowledge. Proust walked in Ruskin’s footsteps in order to revive his spirit, but stepped away from his erudition and intellectualism towards a form of knowledge which was his own. The text of the Recherche is infused with Ruskin’s spirit, but in such a subtle manner that only an initiated reader can resurrect it.
Sara Danius is a professor of comparative literature at the University of Stockholm. Her research focuses on realism in the nineteenth century, twentieth-century modernism, and aesthetic theory. Elected as a member of the Swedish Academy in 2013, she is the author of, amongst other works, Proust’s Motor (Stockholm, 2000).
Confronted with the aesthetic theories of Proust and Ruskin, cinema and photography, the modern ‘vision machines’, offer a fertile terrain for examining the language
and rhetoric of movement in the work of Proust. By way of metaphor, speed and mobility create analogies in the new world of cinema, fairground simulators, automobiles, and aeroplanes. Technologies of velocity relate to the new forms of vision from which writing emerges.
Kazuyoshi Yoshikawa is an emeritus professor at the University of Kyoto and in charge of the Japanese society for Proustian studies. He is the author of Index général de la Correspondance de Marcel Proust (Kyoto, 1998), Proust et l’art pictural (Paris, 2010), and a new translation of the Recherche in Japanese.
Miss Sacripant’s watercolour – that is, a portrait of Odette dressed as a man – leads the hero to a new stage of knowledge. This portrait is motivated by the bisexuality of the model and by the fashion, in painting and photography, to disguise women in masculine clothes. Several real people acted as the model, in keeping with the Proustian technique which consists of using numerous models for a single creation, composition being always composite.
Jérôme Cornette, a former student of the Institute of Political Studies of Paris and the Sorbonne, wrote a thesis entitled ‘Proust et le classicisme’ at the University of Columbia, where he held a Fulbright scholarship. His research also focused on the relationship between literature and the arts. M. Cornette died in 2008.
The melody that Saint-Loup is humming when he last encounters the hero, before leaving for the front, comes from the Dichterliebe. Presented implicitly in the novel, Germanophilia is associated with the artistic direction of Proustian writing. The quasi-political dimension of this aesthetic indicates a delicate but firm stance against chauvinism and nationalism. To attain the birth of art, music plays the ‘foreign’ role which speech needs.

He is the author of ‘On Not Being Proust: An Essay in Literary Failure’, published in no. 67 of the journal Agni (Boston, 2008).
The thesis of Proustian hypertextuality, according to which the Recherche anticipates today’s hypertextual literature, is demonstrated through the Ruskinian hypotext,
which goes beyond the intertext to become a hypertext through the process of Proust’s engagement with Ruskin. In its turn, this engagement leads to what is here called the Proustian biotext. Bergotte’s death can be seen as the quintessential example of the Proustian hypertext.
Roger Shattuck †, ancien professeur de langues modernes à l’université de Boston, est l’auteur de The Banquet Years : The Origins of the Avant-Garde in France, 1885 to World War I (New York, 1958). Il contribuait, entre autres, aux revues The New York Review of Books et The New York Times Book Review.

This dialogue, full of humour and wisdom, imagines pitching a translation and adaptation of the Recherche to an American publishing house – in 700 pages. Is Miss Drummond’s version an insult written right under Proust’s nose? The dialogue presents five characters looking for an answer. It is up to each reader to let themselves be persuaded – or not – of the merits of the proposal.
