  • Abstract: La Recherche poses a real challenge to the Chinese translator. The latter must, on the one hand, convoke the Chinese literary canon which infuses the Chinese reader’s horizon of expectations and, on the other, acclimatise the spores of Western culture into it. Luckily, contemporary Chinese has gained a great deal in lexical permeability. Finding linguistic equivalents for Proust’s language, whether for familiar or scholarly terms, is no longer such a challenge. The author explores these resources in the three Chinese translations of the Jeunes Filles.
