Hugo Boyère, “Fires with inquisitorial reflections. Reading the cycle of fire in Gaspard de la Nuit”
Based on the conviction that the collection constructed by Bertrand plays on a chiaroscuro narrative dimension, this work tries to tell one of its many possible stories. It offers a glimpse of a “cycle of fire” whose reflections shed light on a critical vision of the Middle Ages, with a focus on the characters who were victims of the Inquisition and of all forms of power that entrain intolerance.
Keywords: intertextuality, beguine, gallery, pyre(s), polyphony.
220Arthur Houplain, “Politics and social satire in ‘La Messe de minuit’”
This article aims to consider “La Messe de minuit” from a political point of view by seeking to understand the allegorical function of history represented in it. After examining the satirical way in which Bertrand criticizes the principle of charity in the footsteps of revolutionary thought, we consider the name “Chateauvieux” thanks to the mise en abyme performed by “Le Bibliophile.”
Keywords: charity, alms, revolutionary ideology, literary historiography, onomastics.
Steve Murphy, “Will the freeloaders always triumph ? Resistance from père Chancenet”
Le Père Chancenet reveals Bertrand’s thoughts on politics after the July Revolution and illuminates those implicit in Gaspard de la Nuit. The eponymous character, whose name recalls those involved in past revolts in Burgundy, attacks those who manipulatively appropriated the revolution for their own profit and celebrates a festive and libertarian spirit free of rigid doctrine.
Keywords: 1830, Chancenet, wine, censorship, Louis-Philippe, Voltaire.
221Nathalie Ravonneaux, “Ondine, an art book by Alain de La Bourdonnaye”
La Bourdonnaye provided an original interpretation of the ninth text from “La Nuit et ses prestiges” by transforming it into an artist’s book crafted entirely by his own hand. He thus invites a rereading of the text. A dream narrative, “Ondine” is a literary trompe-l’oeil that echoes the scholarly debates of the time on dreams and sleep.
Keywords: art, Bertrand, Gaspard de la Nuit, illusion, intertextuality, literature, oneirism, rewriting, romanticism, Undine.
Georges Zaragoza, “Can theatre be fantastique? On Daniel”
In order to succeed in the world of letters in 1830, it was necessary to produce a theatrical work that was both popular and scandalous. No doubt Aloysius Bertrand had this in mind when he wrote Le Lingot d’or, then Peeter Waldeck ou la chute d’un homme, and finally Daniel, three variations on the same subject. In doing so, he tries to combine the trend that is dear to him, the fantastique, with the theater genre. This attempt may be doomed to failure, yet the project remains a great opportunity to portray a Romantic hero.
Keywords: theatrical space, romantic, fantasy, hero, devil, magic.
222Mots-clés : achat, autographes, copie, Chabeuf, Charavay, Claretie, Glinel, Rouquette, Voisin, vente.

La Bibliographie romantique et iconographique by Joseph Dumas contains the original letters exchanged between the collector and the experts who sold him some of Bertrand’s manuscripts, including six missives to David. The collector also specifies the origin of Bertrand’s letters to Célestine, of which he was in possession.
Keywords: purchase, autographs, copy, Chabeuf, Charavay, Claretie, Glinel, Rouquette, Voisin, sale.
Nathalie Ravonneaux, “A reading of the sonnets ‘À l’auteur d’Hernani” and “À Victor Hugo, poète”
Six versions of the sonnet to Hugo are known. They bear witness to two stages corresponding to two historical contexts, separated by July 1830, which may in part explain the repeated amendments of the records that have come into our hands. Far from being merely a tribute, they call into question the limits of the liberalism displayed by Hugo in 1829–1830 before he came to terms with the July Monarchy. Bertrand’s ambivalent portrayal of Hugo in these sonnets is also apparent in his other works.
Keywords: genetics, hermeneutics, Battle of Hernani, Victor Hugo, Dumas, Gaspard de la Nuit, Daniel.
Claire Bigel, “Daniel, from Sturm und Drang to Romantic drama”
Bertrand was not only inspired by Walter Scott when he wrote Daniel. Two German sources are also apparent: Goethe’s Faust and Schiller’s Die Räuber. The writer also follows the principles of the preface to Cromwell by making opposing registers coexist within the same work, in particular the grotesque and the pitiful.
Keywords: Harel, intertextuality, theater, onomastics, dramaturgy.
Marcelle Roussey, « À quelque(s) bibliophile(s).
Marcelle Roussey, “To some bibliophile(s). For an exhumation of Daniel Vierge’s Gaspard de la Nuit”
Stricken with hemiplegia, Daniel Vierge relearns how to draw with his left hand and is entrusted, along with Auguste Leroux, with the illustration of Gaspard de la Nuit for Editions Pelletan. Never published, the compositions were exhibited in 1904 but have since disappeared. Only eleven works are currently known. Any new information would advance knowledge about the project.
Keywords: Aloysius Bertrand, bibliophilia, collector, unpublished drawings, Édouard Pelletan, illustrator, illustration, Urrabieta.
