  • Abstract: Within this corpus of painted images (wood panel, manuscript, and incunable), I observe a transformation in the interaction between the audience, the preacher, and the space of preaching. Images of preachers provide a model of behavior and response for the audience of urban religious drama. The changes in this corpus are evidence for a process of creation of a spectator of theater in the modern sense. Analysis of these images of preachers and their audience contribute to our understanding of the « spectacularisation » of sermons and of the performance of religious drama, as well as of the way it was both transmitted and commemorated.
