  • Abstract: The mechanical perspective of the sermon as a voice of the religious authority and its possible parodic uses cannot account sufficiently for the rich and broad documentation on medieval sermons. There are dissident sermons – very serious – there are parodic sermons that fit well into the religious calendar. All is in the performance, and that aspect cannot be determined by surviving texts alone, but needs to be placed into context by an examination of historical documents. What can be said about intention, how to define a voice of authority ? Where are the possible margins and how could the sermon manifest itself outside of ‘our’ frames ?
