This study examines the expressive qualities of secrecy in both painting and literature. Examples range from Chinese landscapes to Venetian masks, from Hans Holbein’s anamorphoses to Diego Velázquez’s nudes, whether veiled or not. This essay is accompanied by illustrated plates.
