The form of the tercets in Arthur Rimbaud’s Effarés, grouped as they are in a series of aab-ccb rhyme pairs, might be considered as a transposition into modern metrics of a Medieval tercet series, aab, bbc, ccd… If such is the case, the poem may lend itself to a comparative analysis with Rutebeuf’s Griesche d’Yver (circa 1260), a text with which it shares a certain number of semantic overlaps.
